At Smart Mushrooms we feel Lions Mane is a mushroom everyone should be taking in their daily routine to boost and protect their brains just the same way our ancestors did.
History
The name lions mane comes from the look of the mushroom.
The name Hericium Erinaceus derives from the two main antioxidant compounds of the mushroom Hericenones and Erinacines. (1)
Properties
Lions mane has been shown to promote the expression of neurotrophic factors, associated with neurogenesis and plasticity including NGF, GDNF, and pro-BDNF.
GDNF - promotes survival of neurones
Pro BDNF - acts with BDNF to promote synaptic plasticity and survival, growth and maintenance of neurones.
Fun or not-so-fun fact: BDNF is decreased in depressed patients.
Hericenones and Erinacines have been shown to stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF). These two compounds can pass through the blood-brain barrier where NGF can't meaning Lion's mane can improve brain health, re-growing and regenerating brain cells. (2) NGF promotes the myelination of neurones. Myelin promotes communication and the protection of neurones. (3)
NGF - supports:
- Neurological health
- Homeostasis
- Cardiovascular health
Lions mane is filled with bio-active compounds including beta-glucan polysaccharides, hericenones, erinacines, sterols, and other nutrients.
We like to think taking Lions mane is like a cold plunge for the brain (without the discomfort).
