Outline
The brain's ability to form new connections (plasticity) tends to decrease with age. This may explain why mental functioning i.e. memory and focus tends to worsen as we get older. (1)
Hericenones and Erinacines are two main compounds in Lion's mane that have been shown to stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF). These two compounds can pass through the blood-brain barrier where NGF can't meaning Lion's mane can improve brain health, re-growing and regenerating brain cells. (2)
Memory
Lions mane has been shown to improve memory in mice during ageing. This study showed that Lion's mane induces neurogenesis Hippocampus and Cerebellum (memory parts of the brain). (1)
DCX is a maker of young neurons.
Fun fact: The brain contains about 86 billion neurones. Taking Lion's mane can promote growth and can repair the damage.
Focus/brain fog
In a placebo-controlled trial, 30 men and women with mild cognitive impairment were randomly spilt into two groups. The treatment group were given 250mg of Lion's mane three times a day for 16 weeks. The group that received the Lion’s Mane pill significantly improved scores on the cognitive function (measured focus and memory) scale compared with the placebo group. However, four weeks after stopping treatment the group's scores dropped significantly.
This research suggests that consistently taking lion's mane can really boost focus and memory. (2)
ADHD
While there is little research in this area there have been reports of Lion's mane improving some symptoms of ADHD and the reduced need for synthetic ADHD medication. This subject is important to the SM™ and we aim to conduct research in this area.
